How to adjust a muzzle correctly – step-by-step instructions

Snuband Hundemaul korb Produktdiagramm - 6 Hauptmerkmale erklärt an schwarzem Labrador mit beigem Basket-Maulkorb

1. Distance between nose pads and eyes

The distance between the nose pad and the eyes should be approximately 0.5 to 1.5 cm , depending on the size of the dog. This prevents the pad from sitting too close to the eye and bothering or injuring the dog.

Important: Too little distance can lead to irritation, too much distance impairs a secure fit.

2. Distance between nose leather and muzzle

The same applies here: a distance of 0.5 to 1.5 cm is optimal. The muzzle must not rest directly on the nose permanently, as this can cause pressure sores.

Tip: Your dog should still be able to pant and open its snout slightly with the muzzle on.

3. Adjust the throat strap correctly

The throat strap serves several important functions:

  • Prevents the muzzle from slipping off the head
  • Automatically guides the muzzle back into the correct position during head movements
  • Should fit snugly but not restrict

Rule of thumb: 1 to 2 fingers should comfortably fit between the strap and the neck. However, the throat strap should be tight enough so that the head strap cannot be pulled over the ears.

4. Position the neck strap correctly

The neck strap holds the muzzle in place and prevents it from sliding forward.

Important notes:

  • Must sit directly behind the skull (not on the neck!)
  • Must not be too tight or constricting
  • Correct positioning is crucial for the overall fit

Pro tip: Once you've found the right position, remember the hole in the strap – then the other settings will usually also fit optimally.

5. Distance between muzzle and neck (lower metal strut)

The lower metal brace of the muzzle must be positioned correctly:

  • Must not sit too close to the throat
  • Must not rest on or press against the throat permanently under any circumstances
  • There must be enough space between the metal and the throat for the throat strap (at least 1 finger width)

Important note: If there is not enough space, the muzzle is too long at the bottom and does not fit your dog.

6. Adjust the cheek rests optimally.

The cheek pads are crucial for wearing comfort:

Positioning:

  • Should not sit too far behind the ear, otherwise the pads may press on the ears
  • Optimal: Position slightly in front of the auricle

Distance and Fit:

  • The cheek pads should not pinch the cheeks (careful bending may be necessary)
  • There should not be more than 1 finger's width of space between the cheek pad and the head
  • Too much play leads to unstable fit and chafing
